Visit to the MFA

Painting pictures with my mind...
Making memories using my eyes...

{Adele - Painting Pictures}

I love going to the MFA. It's been over a year since I went and each time I go I find new nooks and crannies to explore.

This was the first time I was there at night, when it was quiet, and I felt like I saw so much more than usual!

There is always so much to see and explore. This time I was really drawn to the colors and lines around me. For an old building there are so many modern touches. I really like how they meld together!

Nothing like a little culture on a weeknight to broaden the mind...

The Good. The Random. The Fun. v. 8

The Good:
After our 3rd storm in a week, the sun finally came out in time for this sunset. Now that is a stunner!

The Random:
I was at the MFA this week. When I saw the portrait of Hamilton and Washington I knew I had to do this...

The Fun:
I met a fellow 52Framer! Karyn was in Boston from Israel for the weekend and we had a lovely dinner together and evening wandering around the MFA. So fun to meet!

Scav Hunt Sunday: Muffins and Mist

Decadent:
Got blizzard? Then got chowder! I whipped up a pot of Tilapia Corn Chowder last week when it snowed. So good.

Precious:
I love my lighting shabbas candles each week with my grandparent's wedding photo behind my candle sticks, which also rest on my bubbe's milk glass tray.

Solitude:
I love being alone on the top of the mountain. Just me. The snow. The view. Perfect way to clear my head!

Misty:
A misty morning and bare branches make for a gorgoeus scene.

Dessert:
The snow day made me do it....? Tried a new baking mix one snowy day. Something about a blizzard that makes one need to bake!

Screen Time

Before I first heard the pealing of the bell...
Like you I was curious...

So innocent I asked a thousand questions...
Listen up and I will teach you, a thing or two...

{Matilda London Cast - School Song}

Growing up, screen time wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today, especially screen time in schools.

I remember first having a computer in my third grade classroom and it was a big ole desktop, with only DOS and no Windows and *gasp* an 8 inch floppy disk drive. I think we had Oregon Trail, Kosher Baseball (seriously best games ever), and some math program...

Flash forward to my third grade class...

We are beyond privileged to have an ipad cart and a chromebook cart. Despite the abundance of technology I work hard to balance the time the kiddos spend staring at a screen and the time they spend staring at me (well, hopefully listening to me!).

I believe that nothing can replace me as their teacher! But, I know that the new young mind is programed to "tune in" to a screen. I work hard to only let them use their screens in purposeful way and have gotten into an amazing groove this year with how we are using tech in the classroom...

For phonics, I make screen cast videos for my groups to watch to reinforce the skills we're working on.
In math, we work on math facts, make books about math concepts to read to the early childhood kiddos, and watch mini-lesson videos, too.
In writing, we use an amazing program teaching us how to read and respond to articles.
In social studies, they use power points that I make to research the 50 states as we study our country.
We use apps that teach them to type, help with reading skills, and even grammar skills.

I love watching them engage with the technology, knowing that they are learning and becoming digital citizens. Plus, I won't lie...they are for sure much quieter and calmer when "plugged" in...but I am right there engaging with them and guiding them along!

The Good. The Random. The Fun. v. 7

The Good:
I treated myself to a Broadway in Boston subscription (mainly so I have a chance at finally seeing Hamilton next year...). My first show was Cabaret, on Thursday night. No blizzard keeps me from the theater! It was really fun to trek downtown and seeing it so snowy. Amanda and I met up for sushi before the show and it was so empty in the theater that they let everyone move up...so we ended up front row balcony! The show was amazing. Pretty poignant considering these political times.

The Random:
If you don't like the weather....wait a few hours. We went from 30s and snowing Tuesday...to 49 and gorgeous Wednesday...to a blizzard Wednesday....to frigid temps and wind chills on Friday!

The Fun:
I finally got my big snow storm and snow day, just about when I had all but given up hope on a snowy winter in Boston. Thursday we ended up with a blizzard! Brookline got over a foot and it was fun to just be at home and enjoy it all. Friday we had another snow day (more of a freezing cold/solid ice day)...welcome back winter!
